Preceding the meeting, members gathered at Phil Hermann's home. Brenda Herrmann graciously prepared and hosted a dinner for the board members. Gerald Brommer, keynote for Fall Conference, joined us as a special guest during dinner.

The meeting was called to order by President, Phil Herrmann. Phil began by suspending the formality of having a printed agenda and Robert's Rules for governing the meeting.

Phil opened with a letter from Sue Reiber, Museum Representative, announcing her retirement from MONA and the NATA Board. Phil thanked her for her dedication to art education and her service to NATA as Museum Representative. Phil allowed Sue to give her Museum Representative Report first, due to the fact that she had to leave early:
The Joslyn Art Museum will feature a Russian Show with works by the classic artists. Visual Thinking Strategies will be a focus of this exhibit.
The Sheldon Museum will be preparing educational materials in packets.
The MONA is currently showing the following exhibits: June Keneko, Therman Stantom's glass; Journey through Time which is connected to teaching strategies; and the Catlin Chronicles have been installed. Sue reminded us that MONA is one of 15 museums nationally involved with pod/web casting as an educational resource for teachers and their students.

Phil shared information on the 2006 Fall Conference and reviewed the schedule. He extended special thanks to Christine Brown for her tireless contribution to the conference. Phil asked for volunteers to present the NATA awards at the banquet. The following is a list of award winners and presenters:

President-elect, Debbie Kippley chaired the 2006 Art Educators Show, in conjunction with the Fall Conference, which is being exhibited in the Studio Theatre at Hastings College. She explained that the show will be juried Friday morning around 10:00. First, second, third place and honorable mentions will be awarded. Honorary participation certificates will be awarded to the student guest artists. The show will be exhibited through October 28th.

Phil reminded board members that silent auction donations should be delivered to the registration table Friday morning. Phil gave the board a detailed overview of the conference with a special note that Crystal Productions are providing autographed prints of a Gerald Brommer watercolor for all conference participants and Dick Blick will be supplying the material for his collage workshop.

Secretary, Christy Kosmicki read the Board Minutes from our Summer Meeting that Gladys Wassinger provided. The following corrections were asked to be included: President-elect, Debby Kippley be added to the attendance list as well as Donna Binderup, ESU #11 representative. A motion was made by Margaret to accept the minutes as corrected. Deb Gradoville seconded. The motion carried unanimously.

Sr. Margaret presented her Treasurers Report for the 2006-07 NATA Three Month Budget Report. The NATA balance forward was $32,513.45 and our ending balance was $ 32,176.03. Last year the NATA income was over $25,000 therefore NATA will have file tax forms.

Debbie Kippley announced that NATA will be receiving a $700 grant from Nebraska Arts Council for the 2006 Fall Conference and inquired as to how to handle the NAC check when it arrives. Margaret responded that it is handled within the conference budget and report. When the conference books are complete, a copy is given to the treasurer, along with the balance/revenue generated from the conference.

A motion to accept the budget presented by Sr. Margaret was made by Debbie Kippley and
seconded by Angie Fischer. The motion was unanimously approved.

As a side note, Angie Fischer related that she had received communication from Kern Harshbarger, faculty member from UNK, regarding the Nebraska State Visual Arts Competitive (NSVAC). UNK is very interested in offering scholarships to winners from this competition.

Phil asked for information concerning the possibility of Don Kosmicki updating our NATA web site. Christy Kosmicki reported that he would have the creative and technical ability to do the job, but his teaching assignment was changed to the high school this fall, therefore, time would be an issue. Phil said that he would follow up with Eric Clark, our web master who has taken ill, and investigate the hiring of a technology specialist. The issue of hiring a new web master was tabled and will be re-evaluated at the Spring Board meeting.

Debbie Kippley reported on the current state of the NDE Fine Arts position, last held by retired board member, Dr. Sheila Brown. Debby's husband wrote a letter to Governor Heinemann on July 27, 2006. She read the Governor's reply to the board. Heinemann stated that there were plans to make a proposal to the State Board of Education to reinstate the position of Director of Visual and Performing Arts at NDE for the 2007-08 school year. Debbie will distribute a survey to conference participants at registration regarding the survey. Debbie announced that she would be applying for the position if it became available. She will give an update at the Spring Board meeting.

Fall Conference 2007 was scheduled to be held at Concordia College in Seward, but the faculty requested to have this changed to 2008, due to Bill Wolfram's retirement and a change in the Art Department Chair position. A side note was added by Margaret that NATA will be celebrating its 80th birthday in 2008. The board discussed that this celebration should be included in the plans for the 2008 Fall Conference. After discussion, and a few phone calls later, Jeanine Mohr offered the 2007 Conference to be hosted by Chadron. More information will be shared at our Spring Conference Board meeting.

A recommendation concerning the Executive Board becoming responsible for specific Fall and Spring Conference assignments to build in more continuity and help alleviate the overwhelming experience for each conference host sight was discussed and tabled. Further discussion will continue at the Spring or Summer Board meeting.

Phil reported that 2007 Spring Conference is scheduled for Saturday, March 10th in conjunction with Youth Art Month in Lincoln. He hopes to have information in the Winter Perspective and on our NATA web site ASAP. He also reminded the board that Nationals are in NYC beginning on March 17th.

Phil called for any additional committee or ESU Representative reports.

Donna Binderup, ESU #11 Rep. reported on the upcoming Visual Enrichment Day for area art educators was scheduled for January in Holdrege. Donna and Chris Dolan are the clinicians who will be teaching a unit on Dale Chihuly: Abstract Expressionistic Painting and Glass Work. The teachers would be focusing on a painting project and freestanding acetate sculpture based on the process and style of Chihuly.

Gladys Wassinger, ESU #10, reported that they are compiling area art teacher email lists. Their ESU was not eager to help fund any projects or activities.

Mary Gradoville, ESU #19, handed out a complete report, but verbally highlighted that they had 18 new art teachers in their area. Their art teachers formed TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More). During Omaha Education Week, the arts were promoted. On Curriculum Day, the clay workshop "Muddy Fingers" was enjoyed by the participants.

Deb Goodenberger, ESU #15, reported that ESU 15 and 16 are beginning to combine and plan activities. They are just in the beginning stages.

Julie Ryan, Perspective Newsletter Editor, reported that the NATA newsletter was experiencing printing and circulation difficulties due to the Concordia student art team that coordinates the publication with her. The Condordia team is down to one student rather than a team of three. The 24 page issue is scheduled to come out in October. There was board member discussion voicing concern that there needs to be more consistency to meet deadlines. It was suggested to table this discussion until a later board meeting when there was time to brainstorm and discuss options.

Donna Arnett, Membership, reported that she had one concern, which is that NATA members need to send their dues directly to National headquarters in Reston, VA. Donna suggested that a friendly reminder be published in the newsletter or on our web site.

Angie Fischer added a special note, thanking Gladys Wassinger for her dedication and service as NATA secretary and to Sr. Margaret as treasurer.

Phil asked for a motion to adjourn. Gladys made the motion and Pat Schultz seconded.
The motion was unanimously approved.
