2007 Fall Board Meeting

President, Phil Herrmann called the meeting to order. The following board members were in attendance: Debbie Kippley, Julie Ryan, Jean Detlefsen, Donna Binderup, Donna Arnett, Carole Meyer, Deb Goodenberger, Angie Fischer, Jeanine Mohr, Pat Schultz, Cindy Cronn, Christine Brown, Cathy Lemmerman, Sheila Hubbard, Sr. Margaret Proskovec, Christy Kosmicki and Melissa Cleaver subbed for Mary Gradoville.Minutes from the 2007 Summer Board Meeting were sent to the board via email and presented in the Fall Perspective. Sr. Margaret moved to accept the minutes and Cindy Cronn seconded. Motion was carried. The Treasurer’s Report, reflecting the activities on the account through the end of September, was presented by Sr. Margaret Proskovec. NATA is averaging approximately $90.00 per month on investments. Total income from the last quarter is $2,447.21. The total expenses were $1,832.56. The ending balance for the association is $33,409.45.The Past-President’s Report was presented by Angie Fischer.
The Board is still in the process of defining and crafting job descriptions. Currently, the Educational Service Unit Representatives, Administrations/Supervision Division, Higher Education Division, and the Communications Director & Art ListServ Moderator are complete. All other board members were asked to write a first draft outlining/defining the position that they currently hold and email to Phil before the spring board meeting. The executive board will try to meet prior to the summer board meting to work on the second draft so that the job descriptions can be completed at the 2008 Summer Board meeting. Phil will check the National Web site for job descriptions listed for each division representative and email his findings to each board member.

  • Nebraska State Visual Arts Contest will be hosted by OPS on February 23rd. The middle school awards ceremony will be at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm for the High School at the TAC Building, 3215 Cuming. January 18 will be the submission deadline. Teachers are encouraged to download the contest application materials and information from the NATA web site. Angie Fischer & Carole Meyer will attempt to post the exhibition on our web site.

The President’s Report was presented by Phil Herrmann.

  • There was discussion as to the necessity of maintaining the Gifted and Talented position on the board. The consensus was to remove this position if there was not a companion position at the National level. This item was tabled until we find out. Phil will follow up on this detail.

  • Judith Wright has resigned as Retired Art Teachers Representative and Sue Reiber has been appointed to this position.

  • Minority Concerns needs to be filled. Phil will be making an appointment when the job description is completed. Debbie and Phil will work on this job description.

  • Kathy Lemmerman will be moving from Elementary Representative position to serve as our K-12 Representative. Sheila Hubbard will serve as our Elementary Representative and continue as ESU#6 Representative.

  • Phil will contact John Clabaugh to confirm his interest in serving as NATA historian and to draft a job description. Jean Detlefsen will provide Phil with John's current contact information. The annual Undergraduate Exhibit was moved from the historian's duties to the Higher Education position. Jean Detlefsen will begin building a host schedule for undergraduate show through the other Higher Ed. teachers at each college/university. Christy Kosmicki volunteered to help her. The Art Educators Show has been spear-headed by the Fall Conference Hosts. It is a bi-annual competitive; therefore Seward will be the next site for a juried exhibition. The job descriptions and awards need to be hammered out for this. The executive board will be responsible for this.

  • Jean Detlefsen volunteered to continue serving as our National Board for Teaching Standards Representative. She suggested that we look into some type of scholarship and/or recognition for those art educators who become Board Certified. Jean and Debbie Kippley will work on the job description for this position and the role of a Board certified teacher.

  • Lucy (Wicks) McHugh (Clinton Elementary @ LPS) will continue as our Nebraska Legislation Representative. Debbie will contact Lucy to work on this job description.

  • The new YAM Co-Chairpersons are Amber Buhrman (Lincoln High); Ashlea Jurgens (OPS); & Stacey Bergmark (Columbus Middle School). Bob Reeker & Lorinda Rice will mentor them this year. Debbie Kippley will also assist.

  • The date for the 2008 YAM & Spring Conference will be one of two dates: March 1st or 15th. Debbie will contact Bob Reeker to verify. Jean Detlefsen will be chairing the Spring Conference. The theme will be connected to "Literacy Through the Arts" through the LINK Grant. More information will follow and Jean will send the information to Carole for the website and Julie for the newsletter. The board engaged in discussion relative to the timing of 2009 Spring Conference being moved to April and not connected to YAM. The discussion was tabled and no action was taken.

  • National Conference is in New Orleans on March 26th through the 29th.

  • 2008 Fall Conference will be hosted at Concordia University in Seward. It was tentatively set for Friday Oct 3rd and Sat. Oct. 4th, but due to other state events hosted on Concordia's campus, Phil will announce the specific date ASAP to the board via email. Professor Strand (Art Dept. Chair) and Bill Wolfram (retired chair) along with Sheila Hubbard will co-chair the conference. Sheila will contact area art teachers (ASAP) to complete the conference team. NATA will be celebrating our 85th Birthday in 2008. The board is requesting that this be worked into the Fall Conference theme and/or celebration.

The President Elect Report was presented by Dr. Debbie Kippley.

  • The ESU job description drafted last summer was approved by our ESU Reps. ESU 1, 5, 8 & 14 positions are still open on the board. Deb Kubik will continue to serve ESU 4 and Paul Loomer (Broken Bow) at ESU 10. Jerene Kruse (Albion) was appointed to serve ESU 7, Susan Hansen (Elsie) at ESU 16, and Jane Kathol (Elkhorn) as co-rep with Cindy Cronn (Papillion/La Vista) for ESU 3.

  • Debbie thanked Judi Stabb, Cindy Cronn, Donna Binderup, Deb Kubik, Gladys Wassinger, and Deb Goodenberger for submitting their ESU reports on-line and for Melissa Cleaver presenting Mary Gradoville's report.

New Business

  • Carole Meyer asked if there was anything that needed to be pass-word protected on the NATA web site. The board decided that all the information was open to the membership, but for the sake of security, we will not publish the complete treasurer's report on the web. If members of the organization would like to view a detailed report, they could contact any of the executive officers.

  • Julie Ryan reported that the Perspective deadlines for article submission are August 1, November 1, and April 1st. Julie reminded each board member that they are responsible to submit one article per year. We must adhere to these deadlines to insure that the publication deadlines are met. In January, we will see the new newsletter design/format and photos of board will b published, including the mast head, web site URL, and the sections will be found on the edges of the newsletter for easy reference. Personal contact information of board members will still be included in the newsletter but not posted on line (note to Carole). Julie will also subdivide the board member list into executive board, division representatives, and ESU representatives to simplify the information. Phil read a personal note from Deborah B. Reeves, EdD, NAEA Executive Director, congratulating NATA on an outstanding newsletter.

  • The Communications report was presented by Christine Brown. She must have information from all of the ESU Reps for the NATA list serve ASAP. Christine needs art teacher names; schools; grade levels taught; mailing addresses, email addresses; If there is no art teacher at each level, list the building principal information. Christine Brown (communications rep.) and Debbie Kippley (Pres. Elect) are managing this list serve and would like to have it operable by Christmas. Email Christine at clbrown@esu9.org

  • Donna Arnett reported that membership was currently at 177.

  • The Summer Board meeting is slated for: Friday, July 11th in Kearney at the Museum of Nebraska Art. Debbie will set it up ASAP.

  • Phil called for nominations for executive officers:

Debbie Kippley nominated Sr. Margaret Proskovec for President Elect; Angie Fischer seconded. Angie nominated Melissa Cleaver for Treasurer; Julie Ryan seconded. Angie Fischer nominated Christy Kosmicki for Secretary, Donna Arnett seconded. All nominees accepted their nominations. Phil will call for additional nominations at the membership meeting during the Fall Conference luncheon on Saturday.
